HOW TO TEACH THE STAY COMMAND – PART TWO

Here is the second video tutorial of my four part series in how to teach your dog to ‘STAY’. Don’t forget to go back and check out the first video if you haven’t already, and of course don’t forget to come back and check out the final two videos once you have progressed with your training.

In this video I teach you how to progress from the basic foundations shown in my first video for teaching Stay. Make sure your dog has mastered this first step before moving onto the second step – it’s important we keep our training simple and work at our dog’s pace in order to avoid confusing them. It may seem really simple to you but it might not be for your dog if they have never done it before!

Once your dog is confidently staying whilst you step out to the side and away from them, you can then attempt to move round to the front of your dog slightly – keep your dog on the lead for this step and try moving the length of a lead away from them initially.

Top tip – whilst teaching the Stay command always go back to your dog’s side to praise and reinforce the desired behaviour. You do not want to call your dog to you as then they are moving forwards and not completing ‘Stay’!

As with all training, be patient, work at your dog’s pace, and don’t be afraid to go back a step if necessary. Keep training sessions short and sweet and always end on a positive.

Let me know if you give it a go and don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel for future reference.

Happy training!
